Back in the 80’s, prior to Panic Away’s existence I suffered

anxiety and panic attacks. The attacks were truly horrible and I tried for six years to figure out how to stop them.

I frequented the library and read what I could find on anxiety and panic attacks.

I went to psychiatrists. I went to therapy. I went to MD’s. I went to quacks! I got massages. I drank beer. I sat in hot tubs.

Still, I had a very hard time relaxing and I also had a really hard time with the attacks.

My worst fear of the attacks was in the context of business meetings. We were meeting to discuss various ways of making money and these discussions were intended to be productive.

Before these attacks started I was getting a lot of good, positive things out of these meetings.

That certainly was not the case after the attacks started.

It went like this.

The meetings were every Thursday at 1:30pm. The people at the meetings were my friends as well as business associates. We went on vacations together. We would go to dinner at each others homes. It was a positive thing and it often helped increased earnings. So I didn’t want to lose it.

In my office I looked at the calendar and saw the meeting scheduled on it. I felt a cold fear as I imagined the panic attack taking me over just as I arrived at the meeting.

The day came, I hopped into my car and headed to the meeting. I attempted to not think about the possibility of an attack but it didn’t work. I really couldn’t think of anything else. I’m not all that sure that “thinking” is the best descriptive term here.

It was more like I was fearing. I was worried about many things involved in this.

Certainly, I was afraid of the attacks themselves, anybody that has them is afraid of them.

But I didn’t want to look foolish or like somebody that was going sort of crazy.

I just wanted to look normal.

More than that I just wanted to FEEL normal! (OK)

While I parked the car I could feel the tension rising. As I walked toward the meeting room’s door I was red in the face and starting to sweat. I said to the people who were there that I had been running and that I needed to go to the restroom to “clean up.”

Actually I went in there to hide, but you can’t hide from a panic attack!

I stared into the mirror and I saw myself, red in the face and, most irritatingly, just pouring sweat. I looked at myself in the mirror and tried to calm down! That was no use, the panic attack was on, and I had people down the hall waiting for me!

I ran straight cold water into the sink and just started splashing myself down really well.

Well, it seemed to help! My face wasn’t as red anymore, and you couldn’t tell if I was sweating or I was just soaking wet.

I cleaned up the best I could in a Men’s restroom and walked back down the hall to the meeting. When I walked in a few people looked at me and remarked about my incredible state of wetness and I told them that I had run a long ways before the meeting and that I didn’t want to sit among them while pouring sweat.

They let me get away with it. I spent the rest of the meeting unable to concentrate on what was being said and, of course, I contributed very little.

Before the end of the meeting, the attack was really dying down but I was afraid it would flare up any second so I was completely pre-occupied by my fear of the panic attack.

After the meeting I immediately started worrying about the next meeting and how I would handle my new, crazy self.

This went on for years! I got pretty good at going through a business meeting in a panic mode. I made plenty of excuses. I felt like I was crazy.

As the time passed, a pattern developed. I didn’t have the attacks every day, it was more like once a week, usually kicked off by some sort of meeting.

After enduring these pernicious attack for so long, all the while trying to figure out a way out of this mess, an idea started forming in my mind that had some appeal.

By this time I saw panic attacks as a living thing, an evil entity, that was out to get me, and, so far, it was winning! I realized that, even though I had lost many “bouts” with this evil thing, I wasn’t hurt.

I used to box at the gym. Strictly amateur minor leagues, but I can tell you this…when you know someone or something can’t hurt you, you are usually completely unafraid and you come out on top.

That’s when it all came together for me.

I began to see the attacks as something that really couldn’t hurt me. I lost my fear of it.

And they NEVER came back!

Now, this incredible cure took me six years to work out and I was very happy to have discovered it.

A few years later I ran across the panic and anxiety disorder coaching program called Panic Away, created by Mr. Joe Barry and I was fascinated in it and I looked into it thoroughly.

It was a real “aha!” moment for me when I got to the part where Joe explains how his “one move technique” enables the panic attack sufferer to no longer fear the attacks or the possibility of their return.

If you have been following my line of logic regarding anxiety and panic attacks you might have an idea of what is coming next.

Let’s see…

 

I say anxiety is fear. It’s my opinion but I think it could be called “fact” too.  So anxiety is fear.

 

Little anxiety is low fear. Big anxiety is big fear. Huge, out of control anxiety is Panic.

 

Panic attacks and anxiety attacks are the same thing… different names.

 

It is also my opinion that, counter-intuitively, panic attacks are the easiest anxiety to get rid of completely, and, to me, completely gone equals a cure.

 

But I also state that, in my opinion, anxiety can’t be cured.  It CAN be reduced.

 

Reduced in some cases, there are different anxieties(fears), to such a low level as to feel “gone.”  Which certainly “feels” like a cure!

 

So what is the point this discussion brings us to.

 

Panic Attacks First – Anxiety Next. That’s what and where.

 

Panic attacks are anxiety born but I maintain that they CAUSE a lot of anxiety due to the fact that the FEAR of panic attacks coming back is the CAUSE of panic attacks and fear is anxiety so kill those panic attacks off first and THEN go to work on your anxieties.

 

Simply because panic attacks CAUSE anxiety AND panic attacks are easy to cure.

 

It’s just my opinion and I think it’s the most efficient way to proceed.

 

Sure you could try to ignore your panic attacks and see if working on reducing anxiety would have a positive effect on your panic attacks, and it might. But remember, panic attacks CAUSE anxiety, and, as much as anxiety(fear) is the birth mother of panic maybe we’ll just start there!

 

So…what are you going to do?

 

If you are inclined to take my advice, and many have, you go straight after getting rid of your panic attacks!

 

And how do you do that?

 

By getting rid of the fear of panic attacks themselves and the fear of panic attacks returning.

 

And you do that how?

Continuous worry can just plain wreck your life!  I ought to know.

I did a whole bunch of it about 30 years ago and it did nothing positive for me. If you are anything like this there are a few things you can do that will greatly diminish the negative effects and, in some cases, get rid of the negative effects altogether.

Worry is a natural thing. So, when does actual, self preserving concern about something cross the line over to excessive (compulsive) worry?  

Good question…for some people it happens way too often!

You are always going to have things to worry about so how about using a few tried and true anxiety cures and just watch your quality of life skyrocket!

Here are a few things you can do that have a VERY positive effect on destructive worrying.

First, and this is a biggie…ask yourself, “What is the worst that can happen?” Really. If you are living a life of continuous worry and some anxiety (panic) attacks thrown in, then you have LOTS of examples. Think them through.

Almost EVERYTHING you ever worried about DID NOT COME TO PASS in the way you feared it would!

You are terrible at predicting the outcome of worrisome thoughts.

Another good thought process for the excessive worry types is for those folks who don’t know how to quit thinking about work.

Here is the curative thought. Think to yourself this…”My work, and it’s current state of overwhelming problems is going to be exactly the same tomorrow morning as it is now. Therefore, it does no good whatsoever to worry about it between quitting time and AM startup. I’m in a worry free zone.”

Same goes for weekends, days off, or vacations. Just refuse to think about it. When the intrusive thoughts appear just shove them back out. There isn’t anything you can do right now anyway so you might as well relax.  Relax!  You NEVER relax! And you should!

Well you’re getting ready to learn how now.

Those two thought processes were given to me by an associate with Abraham Lincoln’s pragmatism coupled with Sigmund Freud’s understanding of the mind and thought processes.

Do it for a while and prepare to be greatly relieved.

Here are a few more things you can do to GREATLY DIMINISH anxiety.

Go for a walk. On the walk fill your mind with the beauty all around you. Think to yourself “Every time I take a walk I get a little better!”  

It’s true after all.

Drop Caffeine or cut WAY back. Caffeine makes you nervous. You are already nervous and you are taking drugs that make you nervous? Think about it.

Get more sleep. Go to movies. Read a good book. I like thrillers! And I LOVE books on tape while driving…good stories, not some “How to get more work done”  self-improvement tape.

Stories free you from yourself and serve a purpose like a mini-vacation.

So there you have it.

The two thought processes “What’s the worst” and “Why worry now?” will REALLY help.

Taking walks (get a pedometer)  and cutting way back on caffeine.

Get more rest, go to movies, read good books, and listen to a good story on tape while driving.
